THE ARTIST
Marc Alfred CHATAUD (1833 Marseille – 1908 Algiers)
French Orientalist painter from Marseille,
A student of Émile Loubon from 1857 to 1860, he then left for Paris to join the studio of Charles Gleyre.
His family owned properties in Algeria, and he made his first trip to Algeria in 1856 to Algiers and Bône, then to Morocco and Tunisia.
He settled permanently in 1892 near Sidi Moussa.
He exhibited paintings with orientalist subjects at the Salons from 1864 to 1885.
For many years he was influenced by the melodramatic style of Henri Regnault and painted a fantasy Orient.
He participated in the creation of the Algerian artists' society, of which he became vice-president in 1904.
Upon discovering Algeria, he abandoned this style and found new inspiration in the neighborhoods of Algiers through scenes of everyday life.
Passionate about Muslim art, he studied jewelry, mosque lamps, and Koranic bindings.
He is also the painter of the Casbah of Algiers, the alleys, the markets, the religious customs. The Biskris, originally from the city of Biskra, were the men in charge of the small trades of the Casbah.
Alfred Chataud's works are mainly kept at the 1930s Museum in Boulogne-Billancourt and at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris.
